Description

Here we have an extremely rare fly tying item in the form of a genuine Coch Y Bondu Grade A vintage cape. So most tyers when they tie a Coch Y Bondu beetle fly like myself would use a furnace hackle ( black centre then natural red game tips to each barbule ) as I have done myself 100s of times thinking that they were sticking to the original pattern. They would however be wrong as the original pattern called for a Coch Y Bondu hackle which 99% of tyers world wide would never have seen in their entire lifetime. A Coch Y Bondu hackle has a black centre then black tipped red game hackle fibres. So black red black. They are rarer than hen's teeth. I came by this cape when I bought an Edwardian Fly Tying Kit around 30 years ago at auction and couldn't believe my luck when I came across this treasure. Almost a holy grail of fly tying. My belief is that this cape is Genetic but not in the same sense as the Genetic capes of today. My guess is that this bird wasn't selectively bred for it's plumage to be offered to the fly tyers of the day but was bred within the pastime of Old English Game bird fancying and showing which was huge in the UK and is still just about practiced today. The unique Coch Y Bondu colouration was a happy accident in this case. Of course I could be wrong about that.So you can see the size of the cape is about the size of an Indian cock cape which in those days would have been the norm. The original label is included as can be seen in the photos with it's misspelt title. This is more of a collector's item than a cape you would use for tying unless of course you want to be one of the very few tyers who will be able to tie a true Coch Y Bondu beetle. Since it has been in my possession I haven't used a single hackle off it. It has hardly been used by the previous owner if at all. It pains me to have to sell this. Really speaking this is a museum piece and should be on display at the Fly Fishers HQ in London alongside the even rarer Kneecap hackles which are the opposite ie red black red.I have used the white background to try to show the unique black red black true Coch Y Bondu colouration. Not sure if my phone camera has done this justice but it's all I have got to do so. Please check my feedback as testimony to my honesty etc and please Google Coch Y Bondu to see the evidence yourself. Please think before bidding as I am not keen on posting it to anyone who isn't serious about it. In truth I'd rather the item is collected so the buyer can see for themselves but I know this isn't always practical.
