Description

Going by the materials, construction and style (particularly the calliper check spring arrangement) this reel would appear to date from the 1920's or thereabouts, perhaps earlier given the ebonite handles and the extensive age acquired patina to both the alloy and the brass. Crafted by skilled hands it is a nottingham style fully caged fishing reel which has a spool 3 3/8" across with a drum 3/4" wide. Both the spool and pillar caged backplate are machined from billets of quality alloy, screwed together for strength and lightness, while the reel fittings are brass. Twin free turning age crazed ebonite handles, optional ratchet mechanism operated by a backplate mounted brass button - sited on the scalloped brass spine. The reel foot is 3" long - straight, firmly mounted and unfiled. There are some slight signs of age but there are no dings or dents, and it spins well without rubbing. It is fair to say that this reel must have been a favourite - it has obviously been cared for over the decades but there are a couple of screw heads missing from the spool face centre and the ratchet is operational but now a little faint from wear - so perhaps ideal as a really nice display item while still ready for light use. The amount of work that has gone into the design and construction and the attention to detail is very impressive.   Almost certainly a unique one off item I have no idea of what value to put on it, so have put it to auction starting at the minimum I would expect and accept and I will leave the rest up to you.
