Description
News of the World “prize rods” were prestigious angling awards presented during the 1930’s - 1960’s, and were awarded as weekly prizes by the now-defunct British newspaper, News of the World, for record-breaking or exceptional angler catches. These awards were sometimes public events, with presentations held at prominent locations such as Brighton Pier. Many of these rods are now considered rare pieces of British angling heritage and are highly sought after by collectors. Because they were produced in limited numbers for specific achievements, they are relatively scarce today compared to mass-produced models of the same era. This News of the World vintage prize rod is an 8ft two-piece hexagonal construction split cane boat/pier rod with green close whippings, white-lined ceramic guides to protect the line from saltwater wear, a nickel ferrule with stopper, nickel screw-ring reel seats and butt cap. The number 62 appears on the rod blank (pics 9 & 10 refer). It has the complete pristine “News of the World Prize Rod” transfer on the rod and comes with its original fitted cloth bag - please see pics.As I can’t be 100% sure the rod is new I’ve described as “used”, but in my opinion i don’t think it’s ever been used before and is in really great condition (as you can see from the pics). The rod can be Collection Only, or delivered via Post (Parcelforce 48).If you have any questions please feel free to ask - many thanks and happy bidding.
